There are many themes in paintings that depict the human figure. The museum's collection includes works depicting unique human figures, mainly from the Edo period. Examples include portraits that are objects of worship, beautiful women and exotic figures that are the object of admiration and curiosity, and people who gather in the midst of paintings to deepen their friendship. These works reveal the intimate relationships between the subjects depicted, as well as between the creator and the viewer, and the people surrounding the works. This exhibition focuses on the number of people depicted, from small groups of one, two, or three people to a lively crowd. This exhibition will provide an opportunity for visitors to experience the changes in expression in both single and group portraits and to reflect on the portrayal of the human figure.
In this day and age, when we are reminded of the distance between our minds and bodies and others, we hope you will enjoy the figures of people in the paintings, which are painted in close proximity to each other.
