Event NameMuseum Special Exhibition: Wandering Paintbrushes - Tokyo and Kyoto: Avant-garde Painters in Wartime
ContentsIn the late 1930s, the Japanese avant-garde art world was at its peak, while freedom of expression was being taken away with the war. However, looking at the works of these avant-garde painters, we can see that they were returning to traditional Western, Eastern and Japanese techniques and subject matter to confirm their own position and to seek new expressions to convey a realistic sense of the times. This exhibition features works by avant-garde painters who looked at reality in their own way during the war, along with documents from the time. This exhibition will show works by avant-garde painters who looked at reality and painted during the war, together with documents of the time. It will allow us to confirm the flow of avant-garde painting that was nurtured in the two cities of Tokyo and Kyoto.
