Event NameNice to meet you, Kakejiku.
ContentsA hanging scroll is a piece of calligraphy or painting that is displayed on a wall or in an alcove for viewing. They were introduced to Japan around the same time as the arrival of Buddhism, and were mainly used for worship and rituals. By the end of the Kamakura period (1185-1333), works such as landscapes, portraits, and flower-and-bird paintings became popular for viewing. In the Edo period (1603-1868), people from all walks of life, including merchants, began to enjoy hanging scrolls, and many works were produced.
This exhibition introduces kakejiku from a variety of perspectives, focusing on works from the Edo period, including the differences in expression depending on the shape of the screen (vertical or horizontal), the interest of viewing them as a set, and the boxes and documents that have been handed down with the works to the present day.
