This exhibition features works selected for the International Picture Book Original Drawing Competition held by the Bologna Book Fair in Italy. This exhibition, which attracts the attention of Japanese artists every year, is open to both published and unpublished artists, and thus serves as a gateway to success for new artists. In 2021, the exhibition will feature works by 76 artists from 23 countries around the world.
In addition, a special exhibition of Leo Leoni's works donated to the museum will be held in conjunction with the Bologna exhibition. Although Leoni is widely known as a picture book author in Japan, this exhibition will provide an opportunity to see the footprints of his diverse activities, including design, painting, and sculpture.
In addition, a book store will be open for a limited time only, and there will be many related events such as lectures and classes on picture books. Please check the Itabashi Art Museum website below for details.

Contents | Bologna Children's Book Fair and Bologna International Picture Book Original Drawing Exhibition The Bologna Children's Book Fair and the Bologna International Picture Book Original Drawing Exhibition will be held in Bologna, Italy. The Bologna Children's Book Fair was established in 1964 as a children's book fair held every spring in the ancient Italian city of Bologna. Today, the fair attracts publishers, authors, and other people involved in children's books from all over the world, not only to buy and sell copyrights, but also to create new projects for children's books. The Bologna International Picture Book Fair is a children's book illustration competition organized by the Bologna Book Fair. The jury, consisting of five members of different nationalities, changes every year. The appeal of the Bologna Book Fair is that it actively encourages experimentation and a wide variety of picture book expressions can be seen. Special Exhibition: In Commemoration of the Receipt of Leo Leoni's Works In commemoration of the donation of works by Leo Lionni (1910-1999), known for his picture books such as "Swimmy," to the Itabashi Art Museum, a special exhibition will be held during the Bologna exhibition. In 1996, when Mr. Leoni was still alive, the Itabashi Art Museum held the first large-scale exhibition of his work in Japan, and in 2020, after his death, the museum held the "Nobody Knows Leo Leoni" exhibition, which included previously unseen works. As a result of these activities, we received a donation of 73 works by Mr. Leoni from his bereaved family. In this exhibition, you will see the footprints of Leoni, who was involved in a wide range of activities including painting, sculpture, design, and picture books.
