It is a temple of the Chizan sect of Shingon Buddhism, founded in the early Edo period. The temple is one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in the ward, and has been selected as one of the ten scenic spots of Itabashi, and is well known by many people. The temple grounds are planted with beautiful flowering trees, such as cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, which provide us with seasonal foliage scenery. It is said that Yoshimune, the 8th Tokugawa Shogun, once saw these magnificent cherry blossoms and named Nanzoin "Sakura Temple".
The "Hana Matsuri" (cherry blossom festival) is usually held from late March to early April, and various events are held amidst the cherry blossoms in full bloom. The illuminated weeping cherry blossoms are also a sight to behold.
