In the Edo period (1603-1868), the Arakawa River was not bridged in order to protect the capital city, and people had to rely on boat crossings. Toda no Ferry" was built between Itabashi-juku and Warabi-juku on the Nakasendo highway, and is said to have been a key point of transportation. The Toda Ferry was located about 100 meters downstream from the present Toda Bridge, and continued until the Toda Bridge, a wooden bridge, was built in May 1875.
