Origin of the town name "Takashimadaira
Tokumaru Hara and Akiho Takashima
In the Edo period (1603-1868), the area around Takashimadaira, Misono, and Shinkagishi was called "Tokumaruhara" and was covered with rice paddies and grass mowing fields. It was originally a falconry range for the Tokugawa shogunate, but later it was also used as an artillery training ground, and in 1841, the first Western-style artillery training in Japan was conducted by Takashima Akifan, a Nagasaki retainer. In 1841, the first Western-style artillery training in Japan was conducted by Nagasaki's chief retainer, Takashima Akiho. The area was later developed on a large scale, and the town's name, Takashimadaira, was given in 1969 in honor of Takashima Akiho.
