It is a Jodo sect temple built at the end of the Muromachi period. The main hall was destroyed by fire during the World War II and was rebuilt in 1981. The Koshinto (pagoda) of Tokoji Temple is the largest in Itabashi Ward (1.9m high), with a splendid carving of Seimen Kongo (Blue-Faced Vajra), and is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Itabashi Ward. There is also a memorial tower built by the descendants of Hideyoshi Ukita, a warlord of the Warring States period, who moved to Itabashi in the Meiji period (1868-1912), and a stone statue of Jizo Bosatsu (Bodhisattva), which is said to have stood on the Hirao Ichirizuka in the Edo period.
