Wolf-shaped guardian dogs convey mountain worship
Ogasawara Shrine
This shrine in Sakuragawa is dedicated to Yamato Takeru-no-mikoto and other deities. The date of its establishment is unknown, but it is said that the people of the area invoked the spirit of Mount Mitake in Bushu (or in one theory, Koshu). The wolf-shaped komainu (guardian dogs) in the precincts of the shrine are the sacred animals of the Ontake Shrine, and they convey the mountain worship of the time.
