Fuji and Daisen Pilgrimage Site
very shrewd in preparing a means of escape
In the middle of the Edo period (1603-1868), Tewarai Pond was a place where people purified their bodies and souls before setting out on a pilgrimage to Mt. After the Meiji era (1868-1912), with the development of railroads and other transportation systems, it became easier to visit Mt. In 1962, the Fudo-son was moved to Ryufuku-ji Temple. In recent years, the local people cleared the land and restored the Mitarashi Pond. At that time, a new hall was built beside the pond to enshrine the gilt-bronze statue of Fudo and Saint Kannon. Legend has it that the Yakushi Nyorai, the secret Buddha of Ryufukuji Temple, appeared in the Mitarashi Pond.
