The 51st Itabashi Citizens' Festival is coming up!

Itabashi Ward and the Itabashi Tourist Association decided to hold the 2022 Itabashi Ward Citizens' Festival (hereinafter referred to as the "Citizens' Festival") at the "Itabashi Ward Citizens' Festival Executive Committee Meeting" held on Monday, June 20. The decision to hold the 2022 Itabashi Citizens' Festival was made at the Itabashi Citizens' Festival Executive Committee held on Monday, March 20, 2012. It will be the first time in three years since 2022 that the Itabashi Citizens' Festival will be held.

The Itabashi Kumin Matsuri is one of the four major events in Itabashi, and this year will mark its 51st year. It is the largest festival in Itabashi, with a wide variety of local residents participating "all Itabashi," including mikoshi (portable shrine) and dance performances by local residents, a music parade by local elementary and junior high schools, various stalls (exhibitions) at nearby elementary schools, and the "Itabashi Children's Cultural Festival" held at the nearby municipal cultural hall at the same time.

The annual festival used to be held in October, but unfortunately it was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the recent spread of the new type of coronavirus infection. In addition to the Citizens' Festival, the ITABASHI Fireworks Festival was also cancelled this year, and other large-scale events continued to be affected by the new coronavirus infection.

With the resumption of various events in FY2022, the ward's largest citizens' festival was held safely and securely, setting a precedent for infection prevention measures at large-scale events and encouraging the resumption of ward- and community-sponsored events. In addition to canceling the "Mikoshi" event, which is difficult to physically prevent infection, we will inspect performers' temperatures and disinfect them, avoid crowding in various areas, and thoroughly control droplets.

In addition, as this year marks the 90th anniversary of the ward's establishment, the "Itabashi: City of Picture Books" will be set up as a place to reaffirm the history and culture that have been built up to now and to communicate the future brand strategy and "Itabashi: City of Picture Books", an initiative recognized as an SDGs Future City, through the Itabashi Citizens' Festival. The "Picture Book Town Plaza" will be set up to promote "Itabashi, the City of Picture Books" to a wide range of generations from children to adults, so that they can become familiar with and enjoy "Itabashi, the City of Picture Books.
